Punkie Johnson is opening up about the reason for her departure from Saturday Night Live after four seasons. The comedian recently stopped by the Fly on the Wall podcast, and told hosts/SNL alums Dana Carvey and David Spade that she “didn’t really feel like I fit” on NBC’s sketch comedy show. Johnson first revealed she wasn’t returning for the show’s […]

Why ‘Saturday Night Live’ Is Getting Shafted by the Emmys

With the exception of a few soap operas and public affairs programs, no TV show has been on the air longer than NBC's Saturday Night Live, which will embark on its 50th season Sept. 28. And as we approach the 76th Emmys, which will take place just a few weeks before that, it is the most celebrated show in the history of that event. Indeed, SNL holds the records for most Emmy nominations with 341 (Game of Thrones is second with 159) and wins with 89 (GoT is second with 59). And Lorne Michaels, its creator and overseer for all but five of its seasons, holds the record for most Emmy noms for an individual with 106 (Sheila Nevins is second with 77) and has racked up the second most wins for an individual with 21 (behind only Nevins' 31).

As Bowen Yang’s Star Grows, ‘Saturday Night Live’ Has Never Felt More Like Home

Bowen Yang’s Saturday Night Live Emmy nomination landed on a day that started off quite uneventfully. He had spent the morning journaling and folding laundry. “It was a very sweet moment that coexisted with my boring, quotidian lifestyle,” Yang says of the instant he received the news via text from his team. But as he […]

Al Franken as Tim Walz and Colin Jost as J.D. Vance? A Speculative Casting of the VP Candidates for ‘SNL’

It’s an election year and with all of the media frenzy and speculation, a bevy of new faces have stoically entered the national political fray. This sort of national political exposure comes for these career civil servants at a major inflection point for the country. So, naturally, this means that their parody equivalents will mock […]

‘SNL’ Star Ego Nwodim Ascends to a Starring Role on ‘Mr. Throwback’

Ego Nwodim, it seems, doesn’t need downtime. It’s a bit of a prerequisite for a Saturday Night Live player, but the comedian (who describes herself and her castmates as “junkies for chaos and unpredictability”) has a taste for creative stimulation. She booked her first lead role in a TV series — Peacock’s Mr. Throwback, also […]

Jason Reitman’s ‘Saturday Night’ Movie Trailer Teases Behind-the-Scenes Chaos at ‘SNL’

The debut night for Saturday Night Live was no walk in the park, as seen in the trailer for Jason Reitman’s forthcoming movie about the NBC sketch show’s origins. Sony Pictures released the first trailer for Saturday Night ahead of its Oct. 11 theatrical release. Reitman helmed the feature that focuses on the behind-the-scenes moments […]

Steve Martin Turns Down Playing Tim Walz on ‘SNL’

Steve Martin has turned down the chance to play Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live. The Los Angeles Times reported that SNL boss Lorne Michaels offered him the role, but Martin politely declined. “I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin […]

The stand-up comedian made the announcement on social media Friday. “That’s a wrap on my time on SNL!” Kearney wrote (below). “Reflecting on the amazing 2 seasons I got […]

Saturday Night Live regular Punkie Johnson is leaving the show after four seasons.
