The numbers are in — domestic revenue for the 2024 summer box office hit an estimated $3.67 billion, down 10.3 percent over 2023, according to final numbers issued Sept. 3 by Comscore. As counterintuitive as it may seem, Hollywood studio executives and theater owners aren’t panicking. In terms of studios, Disney’s films accounted for $1.5 billion of all domestic ticket sales. When excluding 2023 due to the dual writers’ and actors’ strikes, the comparison between U.S. production activity in the first half of 2022 vs. 2024 is, well, striking. Among projects actively filming stateside, there was a 40 percent drop vs. 2022 for those that started principal photography in the second quarter of 2024, per industry tracker ProdPro’s tally.
